PRE-OP ADVICE
FUEL YOUR BODY FOR SUCCESS
Aim for a healthy, balanced diet packed with fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean protein. Think of it as giving your body the best building blocks to heal strong.
A good diet and gentle exercise before and after surgery will boost your chances of a smooth post-operation recovery. Mr Lawrence also strongly recommends, whenever possible, low-impact exercise such as cycling, swimming, X-trainer, rowing or walking.
YOUR DIET
A vitamin C- and vitamin D-rich diet is essential for the healing of tissues after surgery.
Food rich in Vitamin C
-
Fresh fruit, Vegetables, Orange juice, Apple juice
Food rich in Vitamin D:
-
Cod liver oil
-
Oily fish, such as mackerel, sardines or anchovies.
KEEP MOVING
Gentle exercise such as walking, swimming, or biking helps maintain muscle strength and improve circulation, making recovery easier. Listen to your body and don't overdo it, but stay active!
Plenty of outdoor exercise before surgery is highly recommended, as it promotes the natural production of vitamin D. Vitamin D is pivotal for strong, healthy bones. Still, it also plays a crucial role in stimulating the immune system and reducing the risks of infection following the operation.
WEIGHT MATTERS
Even a small weight loss before surgery can make a big difference. Talk to Mr Lawrence about a safe and personalised approach to dropping a few pounds if needed.
A diet high in lean protein and fibre is highly recommended to help rebuild the body after surgery. If you are overweight, it is highly advisable to cut back on fats and carbohydrates, but not at the expense of essential proteins and vitamins. A healthy, balanced diet is crucial under any circumstance. And remember, drink plenty of water - STAY HYDRATED AT ALL TIMES.
